1981 CHAPTER 61
An Act to make fresh provision about citizenship and nationality, and
to amend the Immigration Act 1971 as regards the right of abode in the
United Kingdom.

Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice
and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this
present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
Part I
British Citizenship

Article 6
1 If, on an application for naturalisation as a British citizen made by
a person of full age and capacity, the Secretary of State is satisfied
that the applicant fulfils the requirements of Schedule 1 for naturalisation
as such a citizen under this subsection, he may, if he thinks fit, grant
to him a certificate of naturalisation as such a citizen.
2 If, on an application for naturalisation as a Britisch citizen made
by a person of full age and capacity who on the date of the application
is married to British citizen, the Secretary of State is satisfied that
the applicant fulfils the requirements of Schedule 1 for naturalisation
as such a citizen under this subsection, he may, if the thinks fit, grant
to him a certificate of naturalisation as such a citizen.

Article 18
1 If on an application for naturalisation as a British Dependent Territories
citizen made by a person of full age and capacity, the Secretary of State
is satisfied that the applicant fulfils the requirements of Schedule 1
for naturalisation as such a citizen under this subsection, he may, if
the thinks fit, grant to him a certificate of naturalisation as such a
citizen.

SCHEDULE 1
Requirements for naturalisation
Naturalisation as a British citizen under section 6 (1)
§ 1
1 Subject to paragraph 2, the requirements for naturalisation as a British
citizen under section 6 (1) are, in the case of any person who applies
for it -
a) the requirements specified in sub-paragraph (2) of this paragraph,
or the alternative requirement specified in subparagraph (3) of this paragraph;
and
b) that he is of good character; and
c) that he has a sufficient knowledge of the English, Welsh or Scottish
Gaelic language;

Naturalisation as a British Dependent Territories citizen under section
18 (1)
§ 5
1 Subject to paragraph 6, the requirements for naturalisation as a British
Dependent Territories citizen under section 18 (1) are, in the case of
any person who applies for it-
a) the requirements specified in sub-paragraph (2) of this paragraph,
or the alternative requirement specified in subparagraph (3) of this paragraph;
and
b) that he is of good character; and
c) that he has a sufficient knowledge of the English language or any other
language recognised for official purposes in the relevant territory;
